I purchased a Sony DVP-S7700 DVD player several years ago to use with my older Sony Television. I recently purchased a Loewe Aconda HDTV, and the player works great with it. I am thinking of replacing the Sony DVD with a progressive scan player, and putting the old DVD down in my basement rec room with my old TV, but have been told that the picture quality on the Loewe will probably not improve that much, because the Loewe already converts all non 1080i images into 450p. Can any of you enlighten me on this? Thanks.

I was told teh same thing, but let me tell you the progressive scan DVD player makes a massive difference in picture quality on any HDTV. I have now tested these several times with the same conslusion: if you have an HDTV, then it's only right to hook up a progressive scan DVD player. You will be amazed!

CptCrash,

What kind of TV do you have? Is it a higher end rear projection big screen, like the Sony KP57HW40? If not, that may be why you were able to notice such a large difference. HDTV's, like the Sony I mentioned, have line doublers that help to clean up the picture. I'm running a non-progressive scan DVD player with the above mentioned TV, and it is hard to imagine a more clear picture.

I'm really curious to find out what type of set you have. If it truly makes a large difference, I'll probably invest in a progressive scan player myself.

Hi ARB,

I seriously thought I could not get a better picture then what I had with my Sony DVD Player (DVP-S360) on my Mitisubishi WT-46809 HD 1080 Series HDTV, connected via component video out. The HDTV has DPM3 (some special name from Mitsubishi I'm sure) which enables the TV's precision circuitry and optics to display standard-resoultion TV programming with finer detail and smoother, natural texture (it gives enhanced definition of non progressive scan / non-HDTV signals, so I thought my DVD picture was as good as it could get. Plus, the HDTV's dual progressive scan (480p)/interlaced(480i) component video inputs enable the highest possible performance from a progrexxive scan DVD player. This is key! So I upgraded my DVD player because I wanted a few more features like MP3, DVD-R, etc. to the JVC Multiformat Progressive-Scan DVD (XV-S500BK) and I could not believe my eyes! Unreal!

I believe this is a higher end HDTV, as it has been rated very well in all reviews I looked at before buying it.

The real key when using a Progressive Scan DVD Player is to make sure you have a newer TV (HDTV) that can take full advantage of it! I would not waste the money for a progressive scan DVD player if I planned on using it with my 7 year old 32 inch TV, you won't see much difference.

Hope this helps,
