Have an install of a new Sony OLED TV with Sonos Playbar (not ARC). It's connected with optical cable. Things are fine technically.
But when you press volume button you get a display saying "adjust volume on audio system" for a bit. It's just a little annoying. Client wants me to see if I can stop it. Anyone know if it's in the user menu someplace? Or ?

What remote are you using? Dp you have any universal remote, even a cable box remote. The Playbar can learn any command for volume. If you are using the Sony remote it will continue to say that because the TV is receiving the remote's volume commands and the audio is set to optical instead of internal speakers.

If using any other remote for instance let's say an infinity remote. Program the remote to a different brand audio device for volume. Then teach the Playbar those codes and you will no longer get the message from the Sony TV.

Isn’t that message basically saying “you pressing those volume buttons isn’t doing anything”? Why are they pressing them then - is there some situation where the volume buttons ARE doing something?

You learn the volume buttons from your TV remote, into the Sonos Arc. So that you can control the volume. Pretty straight forward and a lot of soundbar manufacture can do this. Necessary for when you only have a TV and the soundbar, so you are using the TV remote for everything.
It isn't a problem on most TVs but some do this stupid thing with popup messages and it annoying.
This isn't anything new however, Sony has had this message popup for literally decades, when you use an external audio source with the TV codes. You would think even the dumbest engineers at Sony would have figured this out by now. But nope... Somewhere in Sony's labs there is that guy still licking windows.

Is it possible to program the Sony TV remote to send out an AVR volume control? If so, program it to do that. Then program the sound bar to use that set of volume controls.

Pretty sure the Sony can’t be configured to do that.

I’d say you’d either have to change the TV to variable output and use it to change the volume (setting the Sonos to a fixed output), or switch to HDMI/ARC would would pass through the controls properly, or live with 2 remotes… or get a proper control system.

Playbar does not support HDMI inputs. TOSLINK is the only choice. Therefore CEC control is not available.

Using a control system? Program any codes to learn into the playbar other than Sony.

Never said what remote you are using but assume factory cable/sat box remote. I know Comcast remotes, and likely Directv remotes, have codes in the database for Sonos. Program under the "I have an audio receiver" and then volume +/-/mute go direct to the sound bar. Then setup custom remote for volume +/-/mute on the apple TV remote.

They're using both a Spectrum cable box remote and the factory Sony remote for streaming. It's a very basic system, no control system needed.
It seems I could program the Spectrum to send any command to the Sonos Playbar and it will work. But when they use the factory Sony remote it will be sending Sony IR for volume...............Going to leave it alone

They can put the Spectrum app on the Sony. They don't need the cable box or the monthly rental fee.

You can get a One-For-All URC1812 remote (its a Sony replacement remote with learning). $25!
Program different volume commands in, learn that to the SONOS.
Done!

Why is this so hard! Why is this thread still going! The solution cost less than the gas & mileage for the service call.

There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

For Sony TVs, try going into Sound settings, then Advanced Settings, and look for something like "Bravia Sync" or "HDMI CEC."

Does the Spectrum remote have "Sonos" as an option for volume in its audio option? If so, the Playbar would respond to those native Sonos codes from the Specturm remote (no message on screen). It would also respond to the codes it learned from the Sony remote (would have the on screen message) This would only solve the problem when using the Spectrum remote, but that's better than nothing.

There are no native Sonos Volume commands. Pick an arbitrary set of Volume commands and train Sonos to use them. It’s best that you avoid using commands of other nearby units.
