Ive noticed that Xantech makes an rs232 interface and was wondering if thier dragonrop was capable of controlling devices directly from a pc? Or if there is a better company for doing this. I occasional do PLC programming and a logic based software that monitored and controlled status of components would be of great help. For instance when a centrally located DVD changer is activated from one room it is turned on, then when simultaniusly activated from another it is not affected. But if one room stops calling for it's use the device does not turn off until both rooms (or many rooms) stop using the device. I hope was clear enough in my example. Any suggestions or information would be helpfull, Thanks.

You could probobly use the Xantech interface in conjuntion with Girder to get control of your PC. I would look more at companies like Premise who use a Windows PC as a Base.

The Xantech box is great in that you can programme it with the RS232 codes to send (for example, to a Crestron system, projector or whatever), but for PC control it could be considered overkill.

I've had a very good experience using the TIRA USB IR transciever (recieves _and_ transmits IR) in conjunction with Girder. For example, the Xantech URC2 remote was unable to learn the power command for the Plus Piano projector. I ended up sending a code to Girder, and had Girder send the power command to the projector. Works fine, as long as the client has the computer turned on! :)

One other thing to watch out for when using a PC as part of the solution - make sure you have better than normal ventilation, as PCs get damm hot in a closed enviroment. :)

Cheers!
