Does anyone know if you can make the TSU9400 or TSU9600 work directly via RF with any brands of lighting modules or switches to give you feedback if the light is on or off and maybe even brightness levels?

I am looking to upgrade my X10 home with newer technology to integrate with my pronto 9400 (or will upgrade to the 9600) but I would like the remote to see if the light is on or off so I can go to a lighting screen and know what house lights are on and possibly at what dimming levels. Does the Vizia stuff work well? Is this doable? If someone could point me to where to look I would appreciate it.

Thanks in advance!

Can you be a little more specific? Are there lighting modules and switches that are WiFi for us US folks? Then will I be able to do what I am asking?

The TSU9600 and 9400 both have pre-written 2 way interfaces for Lutron's Radio RA RF based lighting control system (which is easily retrofitted) and will give control of the lighting and the feedback that you are asking for. The pronto system supports 2 way RS232 communications with other lighting systems through pronto script which can be written for any system using 2 way RS232 for control and feedback.

The issue with 2 way RS232 control of lighting is that they are all proprietary systems and require a "Controller".

There are no switches/indivifdual lighting modules that I know of that do TCP/IP let alone WiFi. Use google to double check.

My solution is to use a home automation system to control those things that are clasically part of "Home Automation' I use Homeseer by Homeseer technologies which comes in various flavors (Software only for a PC, bundled controller and software with no moving parts, etc.) . They have a large customer base, good support, and avid users who help each other out. The system is extensible through its plugin architecture.

I use Leviton X10 as the lighting controls. I was cheap when I set it up so my switches are only receivers not transmitters so I get no feedback. That was a mistake My 9600 talks to the homeseer system directly over TCPIP using a plugin I wrote that gives me full control over everything that Homeseer controls. One of these days I may switch to the T/R units for full feedback.

Well maybe I should let everyone know I am currently using a combo of X10 and Insteon products like most people here are with the IR543 module. However X10 is getting pretty old and I recently moved into a new home which is much larger than my old one, meaning now I need to go out and spend more $$ on additional modules and switches (Insteon w/X10 cap). So I figured since I just bought a new TSU9400 (still have a TSU7000&TSU3500) and plan on purchasing a TSU9600 for the Home Theater Room maybe I should get some other type of lighting control that is able to be controlled with these remotes, that is more reliable and something I can see what the status is (on, off, or Dim @ X amount brightness). After spending some time online looking around I am thinking maybe RadioRA might be worth it, but some of my appliances will only need on/off because of compact floresent bulbs and I didnt see a specific module for this with the RadioRA (if there is please someone let me know). I dont mind buying more items or spending more money as long as its reliable, easy to add/change remotes and I can get status feedback. I was thinking maybe I should sell my new TSU9400 and extender and just buy another type of remote/system. So I am looking for some info... Thanks for any help/direction!

There is a switch in the Radio RA product line, (not just dimmers) if that helps.

What about a module for appliances that are not on a switch?

At CEDIA HAI told me that very shortly one will be able to use a TSU-9600 with an HAI Omni PRO 2 controller or Lumina Pro controller. They were showing a test model that had the HAI interface built into the TSU-9600. HAI wrote the code in Pronot Script for their entire system. This means that one will have seemless and easy access to everything that HAI can control with their icons. HAI controllers have drivers written for these protocols for lighting:

1) X-10 (standard, extended, and compose)
2) RadioRA
3) Centralite
4) Z-wave
5) Zigbee (via Centralite)
6) UPB

I also saw this at Cedia and was impressed. I played with a Pronto 9600 that was wired 232 into the HAI controller. 2 way communication and all was very nice.

Great! That sounds like that would work perfectly. I dont want to invest a ton of money on old tech. It will be nice to have something that is two way communication. Does anyone have a site I can go to see this stuff? I will also search around to see if I can find anything. I didnt think you could do two communication with X10. I know Insteon has the capability but not with pronto.

If you want to keep your Insteon, don't overlook the ISY-26 by Universal Devices (universal-devices.com). Using their web-services interface, you should be able to write a prontoscript to fire off any scene you wish, as well as poll status of your insteon switches.

The latest ISY firmware supports X-10, so I too use my TSU7500 with the IR543 to activate Insteon scenes. I'm looking forward to getting a 9400 and whipping up some prontoscript mojo to eliminate the X10 once and for all.

Barry your homeseer plugin solution sounds great, would this work on a TSU9400 or would some modification be needed. Are you running homeseer 2.0 or an older version?

Cheers

UPB can also be controlled directly via RS232. They have a nice free app you can download to generate the RS232 commands.
