Hi there,
I was recently on a programming job for a customer over here in the UK which included 3x 9800's and three processors. It was to setup the remotes for traditional operation of their home cinema's etc.
Whilst I was on the job, I tried to use the Sonos Prontoscript V2.02 with their existing Sonos system and even though it connected, it was soo slow that I took it off.
To give you an idea of how slow it was, once you were in the player and seeing the metadata, if you pressed 'pause' or 'next track', you would have to wait about 8-10 seconds for the button on the 9800 to beep and then it might think about sending the command.

The 9800's were updated to the latest firmware on the Phillips website and I did not have the time on the job to investigate what was going on with the Sonos side of things but I just wanted to ask on here, do you think it might be the version of Sonos software that they are running?
What sort of success have you guys had with this script?

I just want to check whether it is worth persevering with for now..

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Sounds about right.

I'd say definitely not - complete waste of time.

Thanks for the reply, that's what I thought, so I've left the amps setup to the right inputs and just popped a message on the interface asking the user to use
the original remote for content selection..

Seems a shame though, I was browsing through some of the Youtube movies and the demo's look a lot faster =( - its also wierd that Phillips would put that up on the site and make such a big deal about it if its soo poor..

mkleynhans,

As an academic exercise, the Sonos module is a triumph for both the Sonos and Pronto design and concept, but the module's slow response and incomplete functionality limit the module's practical use.

If the receiver supports volume recall or absolute volume settings, I preset the volume when switching to the Sonos input.

With respect to the Philips Sonos module, the response latency improves slightly after the first few commands.

I don't mention the Sonos module to customers. If asked, I will demonstrate the module and we agree that it is not a good idea to keep it.

While I think that the speed could be improved, I doubt if the module could ever be "peppy". And, it will always be too easy to compare the Pronto's response speed and overall utility with the iPhone controller or the native Sonos controller.

We can hope that the new RFX will offer some tricks. Conceptually, the RFX could have some "beef", offloading the heavy processing and always be on-line.

I've just returned from CEDIA in Atlanta where I had a chat with one of the Pronto guys from Belgium who advised that there's an improved Sonos module coming at the end of October. He said that this new module will be a paid download and is greatly improved from the previous "proof of concept" module.

Cheers,

Hi Lyndel,

I'm pretty sure that's what he said through his Belgian accent to my Aussie ears. Hope I didn't get it wrong !!!

Cheers,

Well I think that's absolutely fair enough....

...providing it's 100% faster/better than what's gone before.

Just to clarify, It is not ProntoTeam who has developed the new Sonos Script, its a project from a 3rd party company. When they are ready they will most likely come public here. In the mean time we let them work in peace and anonymity until they are finished. They said that speed is vastly improved and radio is featured as well.
Exciting!

OK sounds promising.

All they need to do is make sure the new Spotify feature will be implemented and it will be a slam dunk!

I'll purchase (if not a crazy amount) IF it performs MUCH faster than the current module.... SJ
