Hi all,

I recently purchased a Marantz rc9001 as part of my HT upgrades and have noticed that there is very little talk about or files for the Marantz unit here. I am an end user with a programming background and plan on modifying the configuration implemented by my installer over time, but it seems that the Pronto line has more available.

It seems that the units very similar, but there must exist some substantial differences that are not immediately recognizable to the unlearned eye. I am hoping someone would be so kind as to enlighten me as to why the Philips versions seem to be favored over their Marantz cousins. Did I purchase the "wrong" unit for my planned tweaking?

Thanks in advance for your time.

System Components:
Pioneer Kuro 151FD
Marantz AV8003
Marantz MM8003
Apple TV (hacked with aTVFlash)
Denon Integrated AV Receiver(for other zones, model escaped me now)
Sirius Stiletto2
Windows Media Center
XBox 360
Samsung Blu-ray player (BD-P 2500)
IP Cameras (Axis, various models) (would be great to control/display on remote panel, seen some posts, not looked into at all)

various media centers (Tversity, J. River Media Center)
I know enough to make things work some of the time.

Looks and firmware are only differences.

5.0.7 version of Marantz firmware opened up TCP/IP capabilities with ProntoScript. This version is functionally equivalent to the 5.0.6 version for the TSU9600.

Marantz unit is more expensive (maybe because longer warranty) and IMO, a bit ugly compared to the TSU9600.

Marantz RC9001 can be programmed with PEP v2.
The problem then lies with the firmware being outdated, and things like backgrounds will not work due to changed structure of the .xcf file.

dz- If as I suspect that the 5.0.7 firmware is functionally equivalent to the Philips 5.0.6, do you still lose Activity background capability?

I don't have an RC9001 so I cannot test. If you have access to one, could you test and post back your result?

Yes, that is correct.

The current firmware is 6.0.21. You should update.

Thanks everyone. So if I understand correctly, the remotes are very similar and it should be sufficient for my use. Once upgrading the firmware to 5.0.7 I will able to use the friendlier pepv2 and program the controller. I will also be able to load scripts written for the 9600 with 5.0.6 firmware compatibility. I will research the new functionality provided by fw 6.0.21 and see if that alone is a decision maker.

Can someone please explain or point me in the direction of an explanation of what the loss of "Activity background capability" mentioned above is?

When questioned about the Pronto 9600 my installer told me that they do not sell them due to reliability issues. I have read nothing on this site validating that statement and suspect it was an attempt to convince me to stay with the 9001.

I also would appreciate everyones opinion on whether I should keep the marantz or switch to the philips, a brief reason for your answer is appreciated.

Thanks again for everyones help. This controller is a substantial investment and I want to make sure I have the best one for my purpose.

They look very similar to me, from tyhe pictures. I spoke to my installer and i am going to plasy with the marantz for the weekend and if i dont like it we will exchange for the philips next week.

I think that the pronto will be better for me as i will be able to utalize all fun stuff from the usersd on this site, and more actively participate in this community.

He still maintained that the Marantz is more reliable as they build the unit themselves to their own specs, and that the warranty is longer.

Should i be coincerned about build quality?

Either way I am looking forward participating in this community.

thanks all.

This sounds like BS to me, longer warranty is no issue. We have delivered +500 tsu9600 by now and have had 3units that had real warranty issues, thats pretty good.

Marantz RC9001 remotes are made by Philips.
They come off the same manufacturing line.
Build quality is identical.
Specs are identical (bar firmware).
