3D-TV: Coming Right At Us

Samsung and Mitsubishi are leading the charge as manufacturers roll out three-dimensional television. And it could be a boon for the DLP market.

Imagine watching an NFL football game on field level with a 240-pound linebacker rushing your way. Or, follow Rudolph, Santa and the whole brigade as they fly through the night on Christmas Eve. Or try ogling a sea turtle as it swims by from just a few feet away.

Ok, cool enough, but now put on a pair of goggles and experience it all in 3D. All of a sudden the fourth wall between TV and you has disappeared. You want to race the other way to avoid a punishing tackle, your stomach drops a bit as the sleigh takes a dip around a skyscraper, and you’re close enough to pet the giant sea turtle that’s eying you for lunch. You’d swear you’re anywhere but in front of your TV.

3D is interesting, but I would rather have a dual output player set up to two projectors with each using perpendicular polarization to give 3D

Of course if the player is about to tackle you in 3D, the camera man was gonna be tackled when it was filmed. My guess is that the live shows won't be that impressive in 3D, but anything computer generated has unlimited potential.

I don't get your post

1) if a player looks like he will tackle you in 3D then he looks like he will tackle you in 2D (i.e. coming towards the camera) so if the camera is 2D or 3D and you see it in 2D or 3D it does not matter.

2) 3D movies on Imax screens are growing. Many of the top movies (like HP, SM....) play in the 3D Imax rooms and so they were originally filmed to do 3D even though the vast majority saw it on a 2D screen and right now 3D is not available on screen.
