Been using URC remotes for a couple years. Just bought a MX-850 and no matter what I do it will not communicate with the PC. I read and did all the suggestions on this site and the URC site. Have two computers, one running XP and the other Vista. The XP machine has a serial port (Com1). I also purchased today a serial to usb cable and still no luck. I have reinstalled the mxeditor, tried plugging in the cables at various times and orders with relation to bootup. Installed Prolifics usb to serial driver.
How important is using a Belkin or Keyspan cable? I picked up a Dynex locally. It states speeds "of over 115 Kpbs. The Keyspan cable specs said 233 I think. Any thoughts here?

sounds like you probably need to reset the com port in the software. a notorious problem since the original software was introduced around 2000. if your connect to com 1, change to com 3 then back to com 1.

i keep getting error 100-07UU-0000 "The comm port setting is incorrect" when I am set to the incorrect port.
Or 110-57UU-0004 "The comm port setting is incorrect or the cable is defective" when I am set to the correct port.
Yes I have tried changing the comm port to an incorrect setting, then attempt a dl, change it back to the correct port and attempt a dl or ul. Same error message everytime. This is the same on both computers. Com1 into the db9 serial port on the XP desktop machine, or Com4-8 using the USB ports on both computers.

I haven't been following every comment on the MX-850, but I have heard from my tech support people that 99% of the problems installers call about for that remote disappear if you use updated editor software.

I downloaded the software from URC site after registering two days ago. It is v 1.12.288. From what I read this is the latest?

I've had problems using USB to serial adapters. I went through three adapters before I found one that worked.

I haven't used it in quite a while since I upgraded my remote. I'll dig around and see if I can find it so I can give you the brand/model number.

As far as the serial port goes you might want to test the port. Do a Google search for loopback test.

Also, try this. In Vista go to the Control Panel, Phone & Modem, (you will need to input your area code in one of these steps) click on the Modems tab, select your com port, and click on Properties. Another window will appear, Open the Diagnostics tab, and click on Query modem. You should get some results. If there is a problem with your com port it should reflect a problem in the results.

Good luck!

FWIW i can tell you that the keyspan usb to serial adapter has worked flawless for me. also have you tried changing the cable? make sure your aren't using a marantz cable the polarity is flipped on that cable.

You may need to dump your program and reload it, as Jeff stated.
