I haven't seen this question anywhere or (probably) I'm just not using the right search terms.

If I want to extend the Ir signals out of an MSC-400, what is the maximum distance I can reach using Cat6 cable?

The reason I'm asking is that the installation has three HDTVs in the front wall. The 40" TVs have RS-232 while the bigger center HDTV has no RS-232 capability. All HDTVs are approximately 50 feet from the MSC-400s.

I extended the 40" HDTVs RS-232 signal cables with Cat6 and now I'm trying to work on the Ir-only center HDTV. The maximum Ir emitter cable length I have right now is 10' (URC standard emitters).

I have to believe many other people have hit this problem. I just can't seem to find a good solution. Should I use an Ir repeater block connected to the MSC-400 instead?

Thanks for the info. Cat6 or did you just extend the 3.5mm cable?

I have a system with multiple emitters anywhere from 350-450' and all work perfectly.

cat 5e, blue pair for the emitter

It's best to use all the pairs in this scenario unless you've terminated the unused ones somehow. Unused pairs can introduce interference into the line.

Gasp...

The other pairs are being used for balun component video and l/r audio.

The system has been working fine for over a year now.

In rigorous tests here at URC we've determined that the Brown pair works best.

For what it is worth, I can tell you that 70' works very well...Running from the MSC-400 into a 6' 3.5mm cable coupled with a second 6' 3.5mm cable into the recommended wall jack. Using about 60' of Cat 6 through the attic and down the wall to the other wall jack. From the wall jack into a URC emitter.

Only surprise was that the JVC HD-ILA rear projection TV doesn't have a remote sensor on the case. The remote sensor is actually on the inside of the unit and picks up IR remote through the front screen. Took the back of TV off and mounted the emitter near the sensor. Works like a champ.
