For the most part, they choose the "lower priced spread" as you put it. The question for most customers is whether the added WiFi capability (particularly when comparing the MX-5000 to the MX-980), is worth double the price. I love the MX-5000, but it's a tough sell against the MX-980. The MX-6000 is actually an easier sell, as it's compared to the MX-3000 and the 6000 is a superior remote, not even counting the WiFi.
That being said, most people really like both remotes once you get one into their hands.
