I use XP virtualized in VMware Workstation to configure my MX-950 and MX-850. Works great, but VMware Workstation is not free.
Two features of the product that would help the CI or DIYer are the cloning and snapshot abilities.
Cloning allows you to clone a full virtual machine or physical machine, so you can start with a base image quickly. Also great if you're still running XP on an old machine that may die, but you still want to use your old OS. It will clone an exact copy of that machine.
Snapshot allows you to take a snapshot at any time and roll back to that moment if needed. Great for testing new software.
