I control my Meridian G68 and 598 through serial control and the pronto 9600........Had a few slight teething problems to start with, but it is rock solid now. Updating firmware solved problem with volume control. Added some delay as some controls were repeating with just a single button press.
could send you a copy of my config file if you wish......it may just highlight any possible errors you have in yours.
