There's a logical jump. If you can't figure out how to program the remote, you're smart. If you can, you're an idiot.
The remote used as prescribed fills the exact niche for which it was designed: consumer level single room systems. Tool selection is as much a part of the business as anything else. I doubt you'd use a lawnmower to clean your carpet, but that doesn't mean lawnmowers are useless.
I'd agree with BobL, the solution is the 900 or 980.
