Whoa...!! Given the overwhelming response to my question :) let me narrow it down a bit.

I assume you can call up a TiVo or DVD menu by pushing the "mode" button, which I think will probably also send the corresponding IR code (besides switching the remote from transport to nav mode).

The question is: when you exit the menu, will you need to manually switch the remote back to transport mode, or does it have some magical way of knowing when you exit the menu?
