I have always thought of it as three color black white and gray. I only use one of the grays , that way you can put that gray to be 50% with the contrast. I think the problem is that the Pronto uses 4 grays at 0%, 33%, 66%, 100% but since the screen is naturally gray at let's say equivalent to around 25% there is not enough contrast to show all 4
