Upconversion will often help because the standard video picture portion of a lot of modern plasmas and RPTVs do not look as good as the component-input section.
I have seen this several times: standard video in has a certain level of quality; that same video signal, upconverted to 480i, looks better. The signal is not improved, but it is put into a better-working input on the display.
Wish they made all the inputs look as good as they can, but it seems they are saving money on the soon-to-be-outdated standard video.
