DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR A RECEIVER THAT WILL HANDLE A LEAST 5 VIDEO INPUTS AND UPCONVERT THE STANDARD CABLE COMPANY SIGNAL TO SOMETHING BETTER, OTHER THAN A YAMAHA RX-Z9, FOR LESS MONEY, BUT WITH A GREAT SOUND PROCESSOR.

Integra 6.5 has 5 video inputs,3 component in,all composite and S are converted up to component. Also thx certified. I believe its under $1000, the 5.5 has same video abilitys, but no thx-ex. Under $600.

Many A/V receivers out there have up-conversion... but I'm not sure that you understand what that term means. Up-conversion takes a composite or s-video signal and converts it to better interfaces like component. Usually a composite signal is up-converted to s-video and component, and s-video is upconverted to component.

I think where you may be confused is that you talk about "... upconvert the standard cable company signal to something better ..." Note that upconversion will not make your picture look better, it simply reduces the number of cables you need to run, and allows for not having to change the source at the display.

I could be off, but making this guess based on your comment of upconverting the "cable company signal".

thank you for your response. i am using the wrong terminology. i am looking to take the basic cable signal that i get now with a standard coaxial cable, run it through a processor, either a receiver or stand a alone processor, whichever is cheaper, to make the picture on my hd tv better. i had understood that the yamaha rx-z9 had this capability, but have been told by others that it would not. does this clarify. thanks

ppabob,

Are you using a cable decoder box now? If so, what kind of output connectors does it use... modulated RF (output on Channel 3 o4 4), composite, s-video?

If you are using a modulated RF, and your box has a composite or s-video signal output, I would suggest buying a cable and hooking up with the highest quality output. S-video will be better than composite, with composite better than modulated RF. These improvements will be marginally better.

If you are not using a cable box, you might get slightly better results using an external tuner, and feeding the tuner output into a line doubler. This will give you slightly better performance. I don't really suggest this... as the results for the $'s you are likely to spend will be dissapointing.

If you really want a better picture, I suggest trying an antenna to receive local HDTV signals. Even if your Home Owner Assoc. says you can't have an external antenna, see the following site:

Winegard offers some really good OTA HDTV antennas:

Good Luck!

Crap in Crap out... Basic cable is not so good.. (Premium cable is not so good either for that matter)

Have you tried amplifing the signal? SOmetimes that helps.

Other wise, run it through your VCR, usually the tuner in VCRs are pretty good.

Is HD cable not available in your area yet? I assume it isnt because I cant understand why someone wouldnt spend the extra 15-20 bucks a months if they invested in an HDTV.....

I bet you have a DLP/LCD or Plasma HD set as well.... Basic cable is only about 200 lines of resolution. (60-75k pixel equivalent) and your HD set is doing 1Mil+ so that TV has to take that crappy signal and blow it up a LOT to fill the screen. This is even more pronounced on Pixel based HD displays. Simply looks Bad. nature of the beast........

Good Luck....

With the exception of the basic models, both Marantz and Denon have receivers that up-convert composite to s-video and/or composite and s-video to component

Upconversion will often help because the standard video picture portion of a lot of modern plasmas and RPTVs do not look as good as the component-input section.

I have seen this several times: standard video in has a certain level of quality; that same video signal, upconverted to 480i, looks better. The signal is not improved, but it is put into a better-working input on the display.

Wish they made all the inputs look as good as they can, but it seems they are saving money on the soon-to-be-outdated standard video.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.
