I purchased Cars too. But since I chose HD-DVD instead of Blu-Ray it's not a problem. In fact, I'm pretty safe buying any Sony movie in SD knowing it won't be out on HD-DVD anytime soon, if ever.
The one that hurt was the Sopranos season six part one. I bought the SD version, then a few months later bought the HD-DVD version. Ouch.
