I also had a bad experience with a WD.

Now I bought a Synology + 2 drives. It's a whole 180 degrees turn. Practically it's a small computer and not just a NAS any more. It can run a website, mail server, squeezebox server itunes server, has encryption capabilities etc. It emails or texts you if it finds problems on a drive etc.

It comes a bit more than a WD or similar device, but it's well worth it. You can also look at the Qnap's or the Xteramer eTrayz, they are similar.
