I also had a bad experience with a WD.

Now I bought a Synology + 2 drives. It's a whole 180 degrees turn. Practically it's a small computer and not just a NAS any more. It can run a website, mail server, squeezebox server itunes server, has encryption capabilities etc. It emails or texts you if it finds problems on a drive etc.

It comes a bit more than a WD or similar device, but it's well worth it. You can also look at the Qnap's or the Xteramer eTrayz, they are similar.

I have a Qnap and never had any problems with it.
I host my website on it. It does surveillance for the house as well.
I have mc2xml running on it. It updates an xml file every day that I use for my TVguide on the Pronto.
It runs 24/7 so if you buy a Nas that is running 24/7 then go for the HDD that are made for it. I use the WD1002FBYS. They're 24/7 Nas drives. It's been running without any problems for over 1 1/2 years now.
A good NAS is almost like a computer without a keyboard and screen but running a stable linux version.

I have heard some dealers not pleased with Qnap 409 but I dont know how valid that is.
Personally I have used e Promise NS4300 w 4*1TB disks in it for a year with no probs. The only drawback is that it cant host squeezeserver and an external PC needs 9hrs to scan my collection (which is >2TB in Flac).
Im moving the disks to the successor NS4600 which is able to run Squeezecenter.

I run the unRaid NAS and swear by it. I am using Hitachi 2TB 7200 RPM drives in a RM enclosure that will take 12 hot swap drives. The unRaid NAS uses the reiserFS under slackware Linux and maintians a single parity drive Data is not striped so a two drive failure does not destroy the array.

unRaid (Slackware 13.1) does run Squeezeserver although I have not yet put it up but several have. It is not a trivial process but I understand it does work.

It supported by a very active forum similar to this one with some very smart Linux people on it. The unRaid architecture, runs from a flash drive but can be disk based. addons are prevelant and the entire system is maintained through a web based interface so a non linux person can deal with it quite easily.

It supports a concept called user shares where a share will be spread across selected drives so you can just deal with "\music" and not care where the files are although when you write them to the drive you still have the option of selecting a specific drive or letting unraid do it algorithmically.

i use unraid at home/office for data / photo / music / bluray rips. it is really flexible i have 6x2TB right now ( mostly for the bd rips ) , but can expand to 16 drives.
in my server case.

for customers i would use Qnap 259 ( 2 drives raid ) and up. ( atom dual core 1.6 ) They are fast and reliable and run squeezebox server and lots of other cool stuff

I am not sure who you are asking but I suugest you take a look at the lime-technology.com forums. They have a major thread called pimping your rig. Lots of photos and specific configurations. I know mine is there, I am not sure if Kevin's is. My unRaid has 12 hot swap bays in an industrial quality case with hot swap everything (fans, PSU, drives). I even set it up so I could boot Win XP, Linux or unRaid, but ended up only booting unraid.

With regard to the Linux server unRaid is built on top of Linux slackware 13.6. There is a complete p[ackage manager as an add on that almost everyone installs that allows you to download and install slackware compliant packages. In fact one of them is YAMJ which just installs and then just runs, no issues. Didn't do well for me as a scraper but that is a different issue. There are packages for all sorts of things, C compiler, Perl, etc. I am sure one of these days wsomeone will do a squeezeserver package and make life easier for many.
