I don't know how you use your links, but I mainly used them to keep all of a device's IR commands in one location. This allowed me to easily change devices because I would not need to track down IR commands that may have been included in a macro somewhere. (I program multi-room customer units) The current database scheme obsoletes this link technique because one can easily replace one device with another and be confident that most, if not all, problem codes will be flagged (there can be some spelling issues with learned commands).

buzz, that's exactly how I am using links as well. Probably a habit from the time I was using the Marantz RC5200.

Thanks for the info about function calls, that looks pretty clever. I am still annoyed to have to perform the migration to PEP2 though. Links were working fine for my purpose and the migration appears to have potential for eating up a lot of my time...
