I seem to remember that in a previous update (last year ?) Philips said that they were renaming the RFX files to ".bin" to avoid any mixup with zip or not zip. In this latest update, the link on the Philips web site for firmware is a ".bin" file which can then be downloaded to the unit itself, as is.

Well, at least I've finally got my RFX9600 working on the old 1.4.5 firmware. It only seems to want to work with fixed IP (I know, the preferred method). IR and Power Sense features seem to work flawlessly, haven't yet tried serial communications.

But,
I still cannot upgrade to 1.4.7
- Tried another PC
- Tried through the router instead of crossover cable
- Tried both .zip and .bin

Anything else to try? Or, is my unit just stuck on 1.4.5 and hopefully it will continue to work with the TSU9600 firmware?

Thanks

I just realized that 7.3.3 is not guaranteed to work with PEP 1 which is still what I am using. Has anyone tried PEP 1 with 7.3.3?

Sylvain,

Yes, the same issues I reported earlier still exist when using this firmware with PEPV1.

I was also told by Philips to always use the zip file when updated the RFX's. That's the way I have always done it with no problems.

Thanks for the follow up (and link) Lyndel. I don't use the advanced tab very much but I do use it for the rotary wheel to emulate my PVR left-right arrow keys. I guess that would no longer work and I really like that feature.

In addition, you indicated that self-awakening was still an issue with 7.3.3. ...

P.S. I still have not migrated to PEPv2 'cause I have links all over the place in my current XCF.

Rotary wheel function (onRotary) and hard key scripts work just fine. It seems there is an issue with just the firm keys.

From time to time I miss the links, but I have adopted a much more powerful version of the links. I don't know how you use your links, but I mainly used them to keep all of a device's IR commands in one location. This allowed me to easily change devices because I would not need to track down IR commands that may have been included in a macro somewhere. (I program multi-room customer units) The current database scheme obsoletes this link technique because one can easily replace one device with another and be confident that most, if not all, problem codes will be flagged (there can be some spelling issues with learned commands).

Since I used a structured approach, I simply added ProntoScript names to all of my link buttons. And, since I was absolutely anal about the names, links can now be replaced by function calls. The general form is:

myLinks( CF.widget( "PLAY", "KEYBOARD", "KITCHEN_DVD"));

Yes, there are pluses and minuses compared to the link arrangement with respect to editing. The key is to be consistent with names.

Now that we can get a hold of things in functions, there is a whole new world of possibilities that leave links in the dust.

For example, on my cable TV pages I use a tune() function to call up a station.

In the old days I might use:

Link to (1)
Link to (2)
Link to (3)
Link to (Enter)

Now, I use: tune(123); or better yet: tune("CNN");

The tune("CNN"); version allows me to define an array that maps channel numbers to services. I maintain the master map in a spreadsheet and simply copy and paste the channel lineup into my Pronto program. (Or, one could use an include) Now, one simple edit will change the channel mappings for all rooms. And, since channel mappings will change for the whole geographic area, I can push this edit through all of the effected programs very quickly. With Links, I had to go through each program, room by room, button by button. Customer changes to or from satellite? No problem! Switch tune() to or from RS-232, IR, or TCP/IP -- perhaps on a room by room, button by button basis, or between 9:00pm and 10:00pm (if this makes sense). If you need to tweak the delays, add or delete the "Enter", tweak the function, rather than blundering through every channel button in the program.

As I said, I do miss the links once in a while, but I would not have been motivated to develop my functions if links were still available. Overall, I would not migrate back to links if they suddenly reappeared. And, I would migrate any yet to be modified programs to function calls, rather than keeping the links. tune() is just too powerful and it is the tip of the iceberg.

Buzz,

Way to go!!!! I have not yet setup cable guides for my system but that's exactly how I would have done it.

You may have done something similar to this already but I'll throw it out there!!!

I might even go one step farther and put all mapping in an XML document that you can install to a panel label or a library script file (.ps using System.include) or fetch from a website in the house. Then, simply use E4X to do the lookup.

Lyndel,

I worry about the home server going down or the customer moving something. If the music server goes down and takes the TV with it, service calls will take on a new sense of urgency.

I am considering hosting the station maps on the company server. At Pronto boot time, I could fetch the map and store it as a global. Unfortunately, this arrangement is about as fragile as the home server approach.

I wish that there was some global memory that would survive a Pronto reboot. I could salt away the previous map in case the new map cannot be fetched.

FWIW, I installed the new firmware on two TSU9800s, a TSU9600, two RFX9600s and a RFX9400 using W7 x64 without a problem. In limited experience so far (a few hours) it is MUCH better than the previous version. For example, I use my TSU9800/RFX9600 with EscientPronto and with the old firmware when I was playing a playlist it would not update very often so it would not show accurately the current song playing. I'm sure this was a problem related to the connectivity issues introduced with the last version of the firmware. No problems now.

jack D,

I guess it was losing events from the Escient. Never seen that happen locally but I have been told that with older firmware, it was indeed possible.

Yes. Actually it was not just limited to when I was doing playlists. Also happened playing through a single CD. Anyway, seems that Philips have fixed the connectivity problem as far as I can tell.

buzz, that's exactly how I am using links as well. Probably a habit from the time I was using the Marantz RC5200.

Thanks for the info about function calls, that looks pretty clever. I am still annoyed to have to perform the migration to PEP2 though. Links were working fine for my purpose and the migration appears to have potential for eating up a lot of my time...

Buzz, thanks for the informative post above. I have been attempting to wrap my brain around the comparison between the old "link" method of the ProntoEdit NG editor to the new editor in V2. Your description explained the differences very well. Thanks again.
