Skill Tester:
A man goes into a hifi dealer looking to buy a new 6-channel speaker system. He notices three systems
off to the side and asks for pricing. The salesman, being woefully overeducated for his position, replies
in a roundabout manner.
There are three speaker lines, each 50% more expensive than the last. The lowest priced rear speakers
cost $200 each. A single middle-of-the-road main speaker is twice as expensive as its matching rear
speaker, while the lowest cost subwoofer is $220 less than that main speaker. The cheapest center
channel costs twice as much as the difference between a single high-end rear speaker and
the median subwoofer.
The man decides on a pair of rear speakers from the lowest priced line, center channel and subwoofer
from the middle line, and a pair of main speakers from the top-of-the-line. How much did the entire system
cost?
Answer:
| Low |
Mid |
High |
Rear: | $ | 200 |
300 |
450 |
Main: | $ | 400 |
600 |
900 |
Sub: | $ | 380 |
570 |
855 |
Center: | $ | 240 |
360 |
540 |
$200 + $200 + $900 + $900 + $570 + $360 = $3130
