Strengths:Nice solid remote, sits well in the hand.
Programs easily.
Nice feel to buttons. Not too stiff.
Weaknesses:Expensive at $35.00 U.S.
Poor button layout.
Could use more buttons.
Review:I like this remote but it's expensive. Up 'til now I havn't found another low priced remote that had all programmable keys. This remote has 180 programmable keys.
I just purchased a Philips Magnavox PM620GB for $15.00 at Walmart. It has 234 programmable keys grouped under 6 device buttons. It has a better button layout then the Sony but the button press is stiffer. It's a nice gold color so it's easy to find among my black remotes. It also has a 1 to 99 min sleep function built in. Look at the Philips (at less than half the price) before you buy the Sony.

Strengths:Excelent value $30.00, easy programming and good learning feature.
Weaknesses:could have some aditional special functions buttons
Review:I'm very happy with this remote. It does the job, and doesn´t cost $100.00+. I have set all the most important functions for my SONY TV, Panasonic HT, Selectron DVD, JVC VHS and Direct TV SATBox, and all in one device. The best buy i could make!

Review 5 made on Tuesday February 26, 2002 at 1:34 AM.
Strengths:Quick set (provided you have the site bookmarked)
TiVo codes for under $40
Simple
Weaknesses:Component Select Power one doesn't work with Sony TiVo (small gripe)
Manual is worthless compared to this website
Review:As much as I like the LCD remotes, I appreciate physical buttons. I was also tired of teaching remotes what a TiVo was. Low and behold a cheap univeral remote comes out with TiVo codes built-in. I had my receiver/VCR/DVD/TV/TiVo all set up with 10 minutes. The age-ol motto really comes through with remote: KISS, keep it simple stupid.
Actual Setup (sorry I don't have model #'s handy):
Sony TiVo
Sony TV
Sony DVD
Sony VCR
Kenwood Receiver

Review:This is a great product! Period!
I have one of the very early learning remotes and this was a replacement. I needed a new remote to replace the 5 I was using. In a very short time I was able to control the Big Screen TV, 2 vcr's, dvd player(taught controls),cd player and OLD Kenwood receiver.
It's great!

Review 3 made on Tuesday October 9, 2001 at 12:14 PM.
Strengths:Effectiveness of quickly learning other remote control commands.
Weaknesses:Poorly written instructions about how to determine which buttons to hold down while learning commands.
The inability of using the 10 number keys when in the AMP mode. This would have allowed me to encode any specific radio station number. Instead, I have to scroll through the numbers until I get the frequency I want. I am still looking for a away around this problem. Think I may just use the Cable Box button and try encoding the 10 number buttons to see if I can tune a specific station.
Review:I just received my VL700 yesterday and was able to encode in 1 hour all the necessary "learned" commands I wanted from my other remotes for: JVC TV, Panasonic VCR, Pioneer Audio/Video Receiver, and Sony CD. Interestingly, the VL700 is a Sony product but I could not get it to "automatically" recogonize my older Sony CD player (so I manually forced "learned" all the CD commands I wanted into the DVD button on the VL700).
One area I was very happy with was the ability of the VL700 to use my Audio/Video Receiver's Mute, Volume, and Channel Up/Down buttons for my TV and VCR... without having to press the TV or VCR button first! (I have all my equipment connected to the Receiver unit.)This is called "Controlling the Volume of Visual Components Connected to an Audio System" and is described on p24 of the instruction manual.
Lastly, the PIP works well. I have PIP on by TV and PIP on my VCR. Basically, the default PIP worked very well. I had to "learn" some commands when in the VCR mode to make it meet my complete needs, but it was no problem and did what I wanted.

Review 2 made on Saturday October 6, 2001 at 10:38 PM.
Strengths:Good hand ergonomics. Excellent integration with Sony products...as if you would expect otherwise!
Weaknesses:Multiple device or command entries do not work...at least not on the one that I bought. Only accepted 1 operation on the Component switch...where's the 250 bit stream? Clear button operation does not work. Manual is poorly written.
Review:Tried many times to get the multi command entries onto 1 component button (ie: press the DVD button and the have it switch the RECV to DVD, switch the TV to Video 5, and turn the SONY DVD player on. Could only get 1 of those operations onto the button. Didn't do what your review said. But you did say it's an "undocumented" feature...so I guess if it didn't work for me, it's not supposed to work! Anyways, sending it back for a refund. I'll give it average marks for what it advertised it can do.
