So here's my setup (all very recently purchased):

1. Panasonic plasma TV 65" (IR)

2. Onkyo receiver (IR -- next to the Plasma) with a 5.1 setup.

3. In a closet far away, a DirecTV box (RF)

I currently get along "okay" using a combination of remotes. I use the DirecTV remote to talk to the DirecTV box in the closet and then my receiver's remote to control the Plasma and the receiver.

I've tried to get my DirecTV remote to be "universal" but it really doesn't understand the concept of a receiver setup. I tell it about my TV, but then the volume controls change the TV and not the receiver, etc.

So my dream is to have One Remote to Rule Them All(tm). I've done a little reading and I've already gleened that the combination of RF and IR is going to present a problem (and NO, an IR repeater is not an option--more trouble than it's worth).

So any ideas on a Universal Remote out there which will do everything I want?

I probably don't care about the budget. I really want the problem solved as simply as possible. I do NOT want anything complicated though. I just want an hand-held remote similar in form-factor to my DirecTV remote, for instance. (In other words, I don't want a big square thing, or an iPad, or anything else--just a plain-old one-handed remote, thank you).

i recommended the nevo above because it can actually control your directv receiver via RF.  that is because the company that builds the nevo remote, also builds your directv remote.  this solution won't require an ir extender.

it has a wizard based programming that will probably be simpler for you to program than other editor programs that require you to do everything from scratch.
