My 80-year-old mother has a fairly simple setup -- HD TV, Cable Box/DVR and BluRay Player -- but navigating three remotes is way too complex for her. She needs a Universal Remote that will do as much as possible for her with a single button press.

I have a Logitech Harmony One remote at home that I love, but I think even that is too sophisticated for her. She needs a big screen (for aging eyes) and a remote that hides any choices she doesn't need.

Are there any large-screen universals that are a) affordable (under $300) and b) super easy to use?

Your selection is "large screen" universal remotes under $300 is pretty much null. At one point I would have suggested something like the Sony RM-AV3100 or RM-AX4000 (big black & white touchscreens), but the label size is small and, besides, neither are sold any more.

Are you sure you want a touchscreen? Perhaps something along the lines of an MX-500?

My suggestion is not going to meet your budget, but my "go to" remote for seniors is the MX-980 from URC. The resolution makes it easy for grandma to see and the buttons are in fixed positions so grandma can remember where they are. In addition, the backlit hard buttons are easy to see and get used to. The interface can be made to be very simple, since graphical remotes offer a "clean canvas" for someone to create a familiar look for the senior.

I know it's not at that budget you set. But maybe it's worth spending extra money so Grandma can enjoy her TV. Finding a good remote for a senior is very tough, and this is the best option I have when I run into a client who needs it, and it really seems to fit the bill.
