Hey, I'm new to the home theatre world and have really gotten all of my equipment since Christmas. I currently am shuffling through five remotes and it's driving me insane. Here is a list of my equipment:

TV:
Vizio E370L 37" 1080p LCD

Cable:
WOW HD receiver (no DVR)

Surround:
Sony Bravia DAV-DZ170 (DVD not Blu-Ray)

Would also like to be able to control, but not upsetting if impossible:
Sony PlayStation 3 (Blu-Ray/media components and on/off)
MacBook

I don't really want to spend more than 50 but if I need to then let me know.

Thanks for the help!

PS - I am also looking for a way to toggle between two optical cables. the Sony surround only has 1 optical in but I'm sending optical from both my computer and my TV. Is there any item that will allow me to pick between the signals so I do not have to continually plug/unplug the cables in the back of the system?

Do you have one of the remotes shown here?  If so, you can use that remote to control the Vizio and the Sony surround.  Use setup code TV 1758 for the Vizio, and one of Audio 1622, 1658, and 1858 should control many functions of the Sony.  We can manually program in other functions for both Vizio and Sony if you want things like discrete On/Off or input selections.

PS3 uses Bluetooth to communicate with its remote, so it needs a Bluetooth to IR converter to work with a universal remote.  If you want to buy one of those, check back here and we may be able to identify a brand which will work with your remote.

I don't know about the MacBook.

Thanks for the reply! Yes, I have the DVR-1056 model. I just used it to program the TV and surround with the codes you gave me and it works fine! I don't particularly need many functions but I am interested in the discrete on/off if you know how to do that? I also am interested in finding the correct bluetooth to ir converter. Did you have any suggestions for my optical cable question?

PS again - for future reference I did a little searching and the code for controlling a macbook is AUDIO 1115... in case anyone else asks. If you have a surround then youll need to reassign an unused button to audio though (i replaced vcr with a second audio).

For the Vizio discretes see post #21 in this thread.   You'll need the 5 digit EFCs, and of course you've already assigned 1758, so that doesn't need to be done again.

For the Sony, see post # 2 and #15 of this thread, and use the EFCs (same basic procedure as for the Vizio discretes) in those two posts.  Use Audio 1658.

For the PS3, one possibility is the Nyko Blu Wave (<$15)  If you can get the newer version 83041 (rather than 83040) then Video 1533 should work without modification.  83040 would require EFC entry for every function.

Right now, Radio Shack has a clearance on the Gigaware PS3 remote ($5), but you need to check if a local store has it.  It also would use Video 1533.
Of course in both cases, you'd "archive" the remote and just use the USB dongle that comes with it.

How about using the coaxial input on the Sony via this optical to coaxial converter?  I consider Monoprice to be good and cheap.

Awesome! thanks for the help with ps3 remotes. However the optical/digital solution will not work because the digital input is where im running my cable boxes audio to. I suppose when I said TV that was a little misleading, in reality its the audio coming from all of my video game systems, its just channeled through the TV. However if there is a solution to toggle a digital coax signal and not optical then I could get the adapters and then plug into the switch in that respect?
