Hey everyone. My current remote is on its last legs so I'm in the market for a new one. What it comes down to is that I want the best remote that doesn't require a PC (I only have Linux on my computers and I'm not going to buy Windows just for a remote). I currently have the URC-R50 which I totally dig and am completely comfortable buying again but I wanted to see if there was something I was missing. I've never used a Harmony and it looks like some of them have some unofficial support in Linux so if anyone can confirm that those work then I might consider that option (I have Google TV so the extra Harmony support might be nice?). Thanks!

Pretty much anything more sophisticated than the R50 requires a PC. The exception probably being the MX-450, which is the "pro" version of the R50 (adds a few things like a different finish, onboard macro editing and RF).

I think Philips also has a few interesting models (Prestigo, not Pronto) that I'm hoping to check out.

Thanks Daniel. I don't use RF and while macro editing is cool my macros are pretty short so I don't think the extra cost makes the MX-450 worth it for me.

I hadn't heard of the Prestigo but looking at them the one that doesn't require a PC also lacks enough soft buttons for my taste. So it looks like it's another R50 for me.

There's no way to clone an R50, is there?

I am out to simplify my life, and I am starting with my remotes. My system components are as follows:
Yamaha RX-V467
Scientific Atlantic 8300HDC
Samsung LS-4095D
My Harmony Remote is dying, and I'd like to get a simpler remote that I can see and I can program without a PC. The URC-WR7 remote SEEMS to fit the bill, but as you probably know, This Yamaha uses separate on-off codes, and the standard URC remotes from my cable company can't handle that setup. My question is, if I get this remote, will be able to program the Yamaha's setup into the power button for one of the devices. If not, is there another remote you like that can do this.

I like the MX-450 from URC as previously suggested. Pretty powerful, looks great and has a good amount of features.

I don't know whether the URC-WR7 will work or not, but the V467 uses somewhat different IR signals for Power On and Off compared to most recent Yamaha units. I do know that the RCA RCRP05B ($20 at Best Buy or Walgreeens) can be manually programmed to send both power on and power off signals. Use setup code Audio 0376. The Power button will turn Main On. Assign 17029 to a different button (e.g. Live) using the 994 command:
1) Press Setup until 2 blinks
2) Enter 994 (2 blinks)
3) Tap Setup
4) Enter 17029
5) Tap Live
The remote should blink twice.
Now Tapping the Live button will send Main Off.
