I have a new home theater with a projector, receiver, dvd player and light dimmer. I need a remote that's simple to operate and that someone else can program; I'm clueless in that department. Total cost should be under 1K.

I'm assuming you installed the home theater components yourself because it would be odd for an installer to not offer a remote as part of the complete solution. For your budget I would recommend the URC MX3000 which is a very nice looking touchscreen remote with professional programming capabilities yet is available to anyone for purchase from a large network of URC authorized dealers.
