Hi all, I bought the logitech 1100 to try out for a few days, but I am really trying to figure out if i made the right decision. I was debating getting one of the universal remotes from universal remote.com but I have no idea if the software to program them is available to the public. I was wanting to buy the MX-880. The box had on it, this it must be professionally installed. I being a do it myself kinda of person would much rather get the software myself and learn to program it. Is the software available or should i stick with the logitech.

I would much rather have a universalremote but only if im not going to have to call a audiovideo tech to tweak it for me. that would be most undesireable.

You can get the software for the MX-880 and do it yourself, but you MUST buy from an authorized dealer who specifically says they will give you the software. The dealer is allowed to decide whether they want to offer software to end users or not. Either way, do not expect the dealer *or* URC to offer any sort of software support (however you can always use the forums on this site). Also, URC will not give you the software after the fact, and don't even think of buying from an unauthorized dealer as URC won't give you any hardware support/warranty either.

The MX-880 is one of the simplest of the URC professional models for programming, however you must understand that there is essentially no help or guidance offered by the software, unlike Logitech remotes that try to do everything for you. So you need to understand how your system works, how you want it arranged on the remote, how to build macros and with what commands, code learning and so forth.

So while I personally feel that the MX-880 (and conceptually related MX-900) are some of the fastest and easiest remotes out there for programming, I know that not everyone thinks the way I do and may find it frustrating to start off with an essentially blank slate.

URC remotes are like Legos: you start with a box of blocks and assemble the castle any way you want. Logitech remotes are like a pop-up book: you open the book and magically there's a 3D castle. But you can't change anything about it, and if you look at it from the side... :-)

thats pretty much what im looking for. i know theres a steep learning curve but im willing to figure out the software and how to use it. Best Buy sells the MX-880 so im certain that they are a authorized dealer, but they dont provide the software. Im going to call universal remote and ask them if I buy the remote from best buy if they can give me the software.

what i really want is the MX-6000, maybe i can get best buy to order it for me.
