Greetings all - perhaps help for a low-tech and challenged newbie? I recently bought a Sony SLV-D271P combo DVD player and VCR; it of course comes with its own remote, but it will only control Sony products and I have an old Sharp TV, so I went out and bought a Sony RM-V310 remote, which has no problem with the Sharp TV (or my Sony AV receiver) but doesn't recognize the combo player. I communicated with Sony customer assistance, and they told me that the only remotes that can operate the SLV-D271P (and apparently all Sony combo units) are the ones that come with the units. I asked about the "next up" Sony remote, the RM-VL600, which apparently can "learn" some operations from other remotes, but the technician didn't think that would do the trick.

Putting aside how bizarre it is that a Sony universal (!) remote won't operate a Sony product, can any of you point me to a remote that is indeed universal enough to operate the Sony combo unit as well as the Sharp TV and a Sony receiver (I really don't need it to do much else, so something not too expensive or complicated would be great) -- OR indeed confirm for me that Sony combo units can't be operated by universal remotes (which would seem odd to me, but I would value your expert opinions on this). THANKS -- private e-mails are fine, or answers to this forum are OK too if you prefer.

No, the vl600 doesn't have a preset code for the sony dvd/vcr combos. But it will learn the commands if you have the original oem remote.

One-for-all remotes like the urc-6820, 8820,and 10820 have a preset code for your combo its dvd 0864.

For my SLV-D271P the 0864 did not work but 20864 did.

(This response is dated but I thought it may be helpful to have it on the internet.)

Kind of a few years too late but I just figured out one can use the Sony
rm-V310 universal remote to control a dvd/vcr combo unit.
You have to program the remote as if it were a single dvd player.
when you want to watch a video cassette tape just use the dvd button to power the unit on and all of the function buttons are the same. Play fast forward and stop.
Hope this might help someone.

I was able to use the "RM-YD010" that came with my Sony DLP TV to operate the SLV-D271P. The code is 767 and Programming instructions (as well as code) can be found here:
