I'm a complete noob when it comes to the more advanced use of remotes. I've got some higher end components that all have "remote in" and "out" jacks on them. I'm trying to figure out if they do what I think they'll do.

1) I've seen products (IR repeaters) that have multiple outputs on them. The output jacks take a standard 3.5mm plug and are designed to connect to a cable with a 3.5mm plug on one end and a mini IR transmitter on the other. I've always wondered if I could just replace this cable with one that had a 3.5mm plug on each end and then plug it into the "remote in" jack. The manuals I've read seem to suggest that this might work.

2) Assuming I can do this, can I use the "remote out" jack to daisy chain to another components "remote in" jack and control them both? The manuals I've read seem to suggest that this will only work with the same brand of component, however if all that is happening is the signal is being repeated I don't see why brand would matter.

I don't have the equipment to test this myself so I'm hoping the community here is aquainted with how this all works. Thanks!

Sometimes the 3.5mm jack on the back of a component can be directly wired (to a control system or IR repeater system or RF base station) allowing you to avoid the emitter being stuck to the front of the unit.

Typically... when you see an in and an out.. you are looking at a proprietary linking technology that will only work with that manufacturers products and remote.

List the make and model of all the components in question. List the remote that you have and any control system, IR repeater or RF base station that you might have. Someone may be able to help you once they have that information.

As mentioned this is all very dependent on the equipment. They could be proprietary interfaces... or they could be usable with standard IR distribution systems. Some televisions can relay infrared the built-in emitter picks up through the IR output port. I'm not aware of too many that will daisy-chain non-proprietary commands.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I'm talking about a Yamaha RX-Z7 AVR, an Oppo BDP-83 Blu-Ray, an Elite Pro-151FD plasma, and various other older components. I was looking at the Marantz RC3001 remote because I can get it for $175 new and it comes with RF capabilities and an RF/IR hub that has 6 terminals.
