Hello and Merry Christmas.

I'm looking for information on getting started with RS-232 control of my Sharp AQUOS. The goal is to eventually move the commands from a computer to an Arduino or Raspberry Pi which will accept the commands from my mobile phone (Android) and/or iPod Touch... The ultimate goal is to have a TV "remote" through my phone or other remote device (e.g. tablet).

Are there any tutorials or "starter's guide" that you guys could recommend? Am I too ambitious and getting in way above my head?

I'll update the thread with my exact Aquos model later this week.

Sharp codes have been the same across the last few series lines. As a bonus point, the IP commands are nearly identical in their structure.

Finding the codes on my own the first time was a giant pain. Here is the manual I used for all the current sharp tvs I control with 232 and IP.

[Link: files.sharpusa.com]

Start on page 44 of the manual (page 46 in acrobat). You can post here, and I will respond to try and help you out. Like I said, I have gone through command by command and built profiles using just this document.

Are you looking for basic RS232 information (wiring, protocol, connections, etc) or specific info for the sharp device?

I would love some basic RS232 information. (I am not the OP). It is always good to get see things from a fresh perspective, especially from with such a wealth of knowledge.

On my web site there is a document called "Serial (RS232) Communications 101". I wrote it some time ago and many have found it helpful. My profile has my email address which should give you my web site. Go to the bottom of the main page and go to the downloads.
