I have 2 lights on the back of my house. Each one is controlled by its own switch and I''d like them to work like a 3-way circuit so each switch controlls both lights together. I'd also prefer switch style vs. paddle style and I don't need dimmers, just on/off switches (in white). Which model number(s) would do this? Thanks

I was about to explain why this wasn't going to be extremely easy, (a hard wired solution) but then it occurred to me that you may be trying to do this with X-10 switches...yes/no?

If that's case then I'm not sure you can with any certainity that it would work consistently. From what I understand of X-10. There isn't any feedback from the switches themselves. So if you manually used one switch it wouldn't command the other to shut off as well. Not to mention that even if you matched the signal the two separate X-10 switches operate on. There is no guarentee that they would operate reliably together everytime.

Of course you could be planning on using a completely different control system. Much more than just X-10 is discussed in this forum. You didn't mention what you were using, or what you were considering to use, so I can't give you any solid advice on set up or model #.

How about a maybe if you use... #XX-XXX-XX...?

Little more info and I'm sure someone can help.

I was hoping there would be something from Insteon but I'm having trouble finding enough info to be sure it would work.

Lol... Hey Mike, here's a link to the second page of the thread below this one. The member making the 21st post claims to have many 3 and 4 way Insteon zones up and running, and makes quick reference to how to set it up. So there must be some way of doing it. No mention of model numbers though. I suggest reading the entire thread. It may have more detail somewhere. I'm not too familiar with Insteon so I can't help beyond that.

Best of Luck...

Congrats... You caught me on an especially boring day...lol. I've been hunting and the only 3way Insteon solution I could find is both paddle styled and dimming. Two things that you didn't want.

Unless there are some older discontinued models out there that meet your requirements I think Insteon may need to be crossed off your list of options.

So far a no go:
...X-10
...Insteon
...Vantage
...HAI

I think the "switch style" by which I think you mean a toggle type, is what's killing you.

That sounds like my luck. Maybe I should just invent one and hope to get rich. Thanks for looking.

I think this might merit some review:

From the manual, it appears that you can set up a "virtual" link between multiple switches so one mimics the actions of the others.

They are a bit pricey but I have used several in single pole and 3-way circuits using the x-10 compatability mode with no problems.

That seems to imply that I can add an additional switch not connected to a load to mimic the other, but doesn't mention if I can replace a switch connected to a load to control both. Hmmm....

You can do what you desire. Wire both switches as usual... link them via Insteon. How far apart are switch locations?

Along the same back wall maybe 30 feet apart.

I agree with bobhinkel. Two Insteon ToggleLinc's will do the job, and give you a standard toggle switch appearance.

I warn you that automation can become adictive, however, and you might want to look at the combo non-dimming relay and Insteon/X-10 control pad. You can use it to control other Insteon/X10 devices ([Link: smarthome.com]) for one of the switch locations.

Thanks guys. I sent emails to Smarthome & Insteon for their input as well. Unless they say no way, I'll get them ordered/installed and report back.

Success!!
I replaced each switch with an Insteon ToggleLinc Relay. I then linked switch A to switch B, then had to do the same and link B to A so it now works like a 3 way circuit.
Thanks again all.
