Can't be done :(

You can however get an ir-543, and send x10 signals over the power lines to trigger your insteon switches(once you set an x10 address for the switch)

Was there any answer to this one? I would like to use a URC remote to control an Insteon ApplianceLinc setup and thought that learning the RemoteLinc commands might do the trick. Is it possible?

You can control Insteon though IR but you have to usa an IR-543 X-10 controller and teach the X-10 to your Insteon. Insteon has still not release an IR controller for their product.

Is Insteon X10 any more reliable than non-Insteon X10?

Or, does one simply trade one set of X10 problems for a different set of X10 problems?

Nope... same issues.
