I am building a new 4000 SF house. What is the recommended phase coupler-repeater. Prices range from $20 for a simple bridge to $200 for a complex amplified repeater.

Is there any reason that the unit cannot be placed 40 feet from the main power distribution cabinet at the structured wiring distribution cabinet?

Thanks for any recommendations.

point 1 get a repeater. trust me on this it will save you LOADS of headaches later. I use the leveton ones.

2: remember repeaters need a line to each phase of your box (most houses have 2 phases) so that will be 3 wires ( phase 1, phase 2 and nutral ) apart from that you can run a wire to your wiring closet. but these units are small enough to mount inside the fuse box. as they dont need to be accessable unless they break this is the logical place to mount it

if I was building a new house and was planning on using x10, I would have the builders simply wire in a 3 wire 220v dryer connection next to the circuit breaker panel (if it's indoors) then just plug in coupler/repeater from smarthome into the extra dryer plug. I've got a corded coupler/repeater that plugs into the dryer outlet (and has another plug for the dryer) and has solved 99% of my x10 problems. with the pre-wired plug, if/when the unit fails, just order a new one and plug it in. you also wouldn't have to worry about noise from the dryer and it would be as close to the panel as possible.

Actually you might want to think about something like the CR-234 listed here, its far better than that smarthome plug in job.

Which is better, the HomePro CR234 or the Leviton 2-Phase X10 amplified coupler/repeater? The Leviton is less than half the cost of the HomePro.

My home is 2240 sq ft, and has only a few switchlincs and a lamplinc, plus an ir543 and a maxi-controller.

I really don't know what I'm talking about, but seems like I remember some posts some time ago about the Levitons being troublsome. Perhaps someone who knows can jump in.

As I think more about it, I think they specifically said they had to remove the Levitions and throw them away, replacing them with the CR234 and everything worked fine after that.

CR-234 I think is the best if you aren't putting in a Lightolier X10 firewall.

Asking for first-hand responses instead of second-hand is being greedy?

Martin, given that I'm not putting in a firewall, and have no other repeaters, is there an advantage to the CR-234 over the CR-230? The price difference is significant ($200 vs. $110 at smarthome).

I'm convinced to not use the Leviton, and have returned it.

They are a little less than that at HomeAutomationNet.com and the service is very good.
