Hi,

I recently purchased the X10 three way switch kit for my living room. There is a switch on each side of the room with a white, black, red, and ground wire
going to each. I installed both the slave and master X10 swith to the appropriate wall, and ran into a problem. I can turn the lights on/off no problem with the IR 543 remote...but the problem is, the slave swith only will turn the lights off, it wont turn them on. The master works fine...it will turn them on or off as it should. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Try swappping the master and remote.

If you place them in the "wrong" location, turning off the light also disables the slave.

As you have probably guessed, Im new to this...how exactly do I know which one is the master and which is the slave? I have one swith that is a dimmer, and the other a simple on/off switch. Also, should i worry that X10 has no ground wire terminal?

In the first post, you said that you installed a master and a slave. I assumed you meant the pair of X-10 units that replace a pair of 3-way switches.

In the second post, you have a dimmer and a simple on-off switch, which do not describe X-10 devices. I'm really confused!

If you installed one X-10 unit in each box (opposite sides of the room), then it doesn't really matter which one is which to try my suggestion.

How about telling me what was in each box before you started, and what is in each box now. Also, did you note which wire was on the dark (common) terminal on each original 3-way?

Sorry about the confusion...after reading it i see i wasnt very clear. Ill start from the beginning. I have replaced the original switches back in the boxes. I have a regular dimmer and then a simple on/off switch (original switches, not X10). These two switches control my living room ceiling lights. I want to install my X10 three way switches that i picked up yesterday. Out of the boxes, attached to the original switches are a black, white, and red wire. The black wire is connected to the "common" screw. I tried to switch the original switches with X10's, and used the black wire as the common wire. Once connected though, i could only turn on the lights with the dimmer X10 (master) swith, but not the slave switch. I can turn the lights out with either one. Is this a little clearer? i know i tend to babble sometimes...thanks for your help!

No problem.

Now I stand behind my suggestion: replace them, but this time, put the 'master' and the 'slave' back in, this time with each unit in the opposite box from last time.
