X-10 dims in steps and not smoothly

When i use the IR7243 or my marantz rc5000 the dimmers ,dims in pronounced steps instead of smoothly, what can this be ???

Well, if you explain what the hell "dimming in shocks" means, we may be able to help you.

My guess is that you mean it dims in pronounced steps instead of smoothly. Anyone else care to venture a theory?

thanks for the edit charlez. my IR543 dims in steps also. i was always under the impression that this was normal. of course, it's only noticable when i dim slowly, if i hold the dim button down, it's smooth and fast.
