I just go into my new house and I have two ceiling fans. Along the way, I learned that my fans are a two wire system. One wall switch either controls the lights on the fan or turns fan on/off.

I also know that I can get a "kit" that you can wire a receiver into the fan itself up in the canopy. Thereby using either a wired or wireless controller.

All I want to do is to be able to control the lights and the three fan speeds.

With that said, I will be getting a HTM MX-700 remote.

What would I need to do in order to control the fan/lights from my MX-700. (if possible).

Thanks in advance for any help

Cleanest way I know of (I haven't tried the new Lightolier Fan switch) is to use (3) scene-capable switchlinc non-dimming switches. These are two-way but disable the two way mode so they don't send out stray signals. Hook one directly to the fan(for hihg), connect one to the fan thru a quiet type fan speed control set to medium and the 3rd one thru a similar manual control set to low. Program your switchlincs to respond to four scenes that each enable one switchlinc at a time or none (for off). Program your MX-700 to output a single x10 address (just a letter and a number no on or off required) for each of the four modes (low, medium, high & off). It may seem complicated and/or expensive but once you've done one it's simple for the rest of them in your house and this setup is fully smarthome ready.

Thank you for your reply!

That may work, but there would be only two wires going to the switch.

I know I would have to hard wire a receiver into the fan canopy. I think that works via RF.

So I would need some type of X-10 switch that would be able to control the lights and 3 fan speeds. Also an IR543 to convert the RF to IR so that my MX-700 would work. I think.....

Help? :)

It works via X10. The IR543 converts IR to X10. No RF involved.

Thanks Larry for clearing that up for me.

So would I go out to the Home Depot to pick up one of these kits to put in the fan? Or is there another product that I can look into? One of the kits that I looked at, had dip switches for the code and a small antenna coming out of the receiver.

And what switch would you recommend for the wall?

I may have errored with the wiring scheme behind my switch plate. I have two black wires going to my switch (standard light switch) and I have two whites that have a wire nut in the back. So I guess I have a neutral. So I have a 3 wire setup?
