I have a RC500I remote and I am wanting to control my RF remote light modules with my IR remote I have read lots of tech Forums on remote central but no one has talked about the RC5000I and X-10

I am wanting to now if I have all the info right that I am going to need to do this. I need the IR543 IR to X10 Converter that I can get from

[Link: homeautomationnet.com]

and the RF Code Generator to get the code for the IR remote. (I already have the software). (Do I use the pronto option because it is the same as the RC5000I?) I also have a XANTECH - IR relay System so if I have problems with light I can put the IR543 out of the way like under the couch so the sun can’t get to it.

But my main concern is will the IR543 IR converter work my radio shack version of the x-10 modules and I do now that the x-10 modules will work with radio shacks modules and will the RC5000I accept the IR code that the code generator produces. Some of the Sony receiver code that I have got off of ccf file my software will not except it as a valid IR code. My soft ware version is TouchScreen204.

And my last question is how do’s the IR543 IR to X10 Converter work dos it receive the IR code from my remote then send out a RF signal just like I was using the original X-10 remote to the main receiver then that receiver send the signal to all 16 modules that I have around the house. Or do’s it take the place of the main receiver and sent out the signal to all 16 modules in the house it’s self? thanks Bill Hall

Bill, the 543 receives IR from the remote, and transmits the X-10 signals onto the power line, which is received by the modules. In other words, if we call the power-line signals 'X-10 signals', the IR-543 is an IR-to-X10 converter.

There are also RF-to-X-10 converters, and there are RF-to-IR converters. I guess you can convert anything to anything if you need to.

Well what I am wanting to know is.. well lets start here my remote sends out inferred signals my lamp and light modules are turned on with Radio frequencies do’s the IR543 IR to X10 Converter convert that? Do’s it see the inferred signal that my RC5000I is going to be sending out and convert it to radio frequencies that the light modules can under stand and use to turn on/off? Bill Hall

I was puzzled at first by the word 'inferred', until I realized you meant 'infra-red', or IR. Okay, now there is something I need to explain to you:

Except for the modules that are designed to work with RF transmitters (hand-held palm controllers, key-chain transmitters, etc), X-10 is not an RF system.

X-10 controllers actually send specially-coded signals (not RF) over the power circuits in your home. Table-top controllers, some wall-mounted keypads, etc. are examples.

The modules and wall switches/dimmers receive these signals and respond by switching or dimming your loads. Only the modules with antennas receive RF signals.

The IR-543 is a table-top controller that also receives IR commands and 'translates' them into the same X-10 signals (again, not RF), and sends them over the power wires.

If the RC-5000 is an IR remote, the IR-543 will suffice. If it's an RF remote, you need an RF-receiving module, with an antenna. (Some remotes do both IR and RF.)

For more info, click here, especially question no. A3-05.

I don't know the answer...Bill is asking about Radio Shack lamp controllers that are controlled via RF signals. They look identical to X-10 controllers - dial for home code/device number, size but receive an RF signal.

I had some but just opted to switch to regular X-10 controllers and an IR543.

To do what Bill is looking for he will have to end up generating RF signals - don't know if there is X-10 to RF converters and if/how the Radio Shack codes are available/learned...

Larry Thank!
I just learned more from you then I did reading the howl manual for radio shack modules. Ok I see how it works now I use my IR remote (the RC5000I) the IR543 IR to X10 Converter gets the IR and converts it to the x-10 signal then sends that signal through my house wiring and the modules work. WOW that x-10 stuff is cooler then I thought. I thought the howl time I have had these thing that they were RF sorry for the miss analyses. I ordered that IR543 at 19.95 if it don’t work for me I now some other people I can pawn it off on.
