There are dimmers that can be used for controlling fans (any of the PCS dimmers, for exmaple) but many (most?) fans will buzz when dimmed in this manner and there's no way to predict which fan will buzz and which one will not without trying. You might even have two identical fans where one will buzz and one will not.

I use the PCS switches in my home and their version 3 switch can be programmed for dimming or non-dimming operation so what I've done is installed those switches on my fans and if it buzzes I can turn off the dimming.

I was unable to install a X10 dimmer (PCS or Switchlinc) that would not buzz, so I installed a Switchlinc florescent switch. Gives remote access, but speeds are controlled by factory fan switch.

It isn't the switch that buzzes, it's the fan. The advantage of the ver 3 PCS switches is that you can program it to act as either a dimmer or a flourescent switch so if you fan buzzes you just reprogram the switch.

The key is a fan that has very tight motor windings. If there are sections of the windings that can move then it will buzz.

Bruce, you can dupicate your setup and wire it in parallel for the same fan, thus giving you more speed selections by setting the manual controllers at different settings. The new "Togglelincs" flourescents are now even cheaper than the decora styles.

Have you looked into the new Lightolier Compose Fan controllers? They are X10 and there is no buzz at all. I have some and they work well but cost a bunch. They have three speeds: low, medium and high.

Can anyone point me to some info on these specific fan controller switches(Lightolier Compose)? They seem to have disappeared from the horizon.

How much do they cost? My arrangement (with the (3) switchlinc scene capapble non-dims) costs (besides the extra gang-box space) about $150 dealer. I guess it's too late for me anyway. I sure love the Lightolier Lytejacks, I have them all over my ceiling.

I would guess around $100. I have not found anyone on the web who sells it, but you may want to try Worthington Distribution (http://www.worthdist.com), or look at the lolcontrols website for the nearest dealer to you.

I paid 93.00 and change each at worthington. They are not listed on their website and you have to call to get them. Worthington's forum has a few threads about them. If you get one and have difficulty with setting it up, that is understandable. They are quite tricky and I spent a good hour on the phone with Tom Morgan getting it to work right.

They are nice.
