I would like to automate 2-3 lamps that simply plug into the wall. I have no switches or dimmers connected to these outlets, they are just plain receptacles. I'm using a pronto remote for my home theater. Also, the receptacles for the lamps are behind my tv, chairs, etc. I need a shopping list and a plan. Some poeple said use X10 automation, then I've heard us Lutron or Leviton. I'm in need of some good advise. Thanks.

You need an IR543, with it you can operate any of these modules [Link: homeautomationnet.com] or any other X10 receiver. Lutron makes some RF devices, quite expensive but they work fine. Leviton is a manufactures of X10 products as does X10, and Sitchlinc (lamplink). Bill www.homeautomationnet.com

I too am new at this. Just received my IR543 (Infrared To X10 Transceiver for IR control of X10 Products) and LampLinc (LS Lamp module with X10 scene capability). Works great! I'm using a Sony RM-AV3000 which has a built-in (presets) X10 lighting library. I'm guessing if your remote doesn't have this you may have to get an X10 remote to learn from. There are folks on this forum that are alot more qualified than me and I'm sure someone will help you along.
Great Forum!

Karl10,
I just got the Sony RM-AV3000 too. I don't really know much about X10 stuff. So I want to clarify. Can I just get an "IR543" and one of those "LampLinc LS" or "PAM01" modules and hook up a lamp ? Or do I need more equipment. If it's only those 2 items, that's pretty cheap setup!
TIA

Yes, that's all you need. You may find it so convenient that you keep going - get a mini-controller for some places (bedside table, etc) and lamp modules that can dim those bedroom lights... check the starter kits at www.SmartHome.com or general prices at www.homeautomationnet.comDon

I see the IR543 at homeautomationnet.com, so I guess I just need 1 or 2 lamp modules. Anyone know if I can just get 1 lamp module, hook up an extension cord and use 2 lamps ? Or would this overload it. TIA

You can hook up as many lights to one lamp module as you want as long as the total wattage equals less than the maximum allowed for the lamp module (300 watts for incandesent on a standard X10 lamp module). Remember Lamp Modules are for LAMPS only! No transformers like those found on track lighting, low voltage reading lamps and SOME halogen lamps. If you are not sure you can check the voltage rating for the replacement bulbs (look for a label on the lamp) 100-120 volts (USA) is OK, anything lower may mean trouble. Are you sure about that? i've been using lamp modules on transformer supplied halogens for at least 10 years without a problem. remember, a transformer reflects the impedance on it's secondary back to the primary as well. Drive a resistive load, and the primary 'looks' resistive.

Kool !!! Got my IR543 and LampLinc Module delivered yesterday. Up and running in 5 minutes !!! This is so sick. Like any "normal" person, I played with it for like 20 minutes. Haven't adjusted the ramp up/down speeds.....yet. In the middle of the page here, there's a link to download a 5 second avi of my X-10 in action (Built for "normal" people only).
