Any controllers using USB rather than good old fashion serial ports?

I don't know of any. I suppose you could use a USB -> Serial adapter.

X-10 did at one time design a very interesting unit for IBM designated CM14A, that had a USB interface, in addition to send/receive IR. I don't believe that X10 or IBM ever marketed it though.

USB has a suggested maximum length of 15'. Serial can go WAY further than that.
Just a thought as to 1 possible reason. Another may be to be compatible with the maximum # of computers, new or old.
