do the PCS brand switches "require" a programmer like the Maxicontroller to have their addresses and scenes set up? Why would it be better to have a Maxicontroller if the above is not the case? what am I missing here?

Also a second question, what type of remote will teach IR to my MX-500? (by teach, I mean codes other than house code "A")?

1. You need the ability to send addresses separately from commands. Any controller than allows that will work. The maxicontroller is just the easiest way to do it.

2. The only IR transceiver which accepts housecode IR commands is the IR543AH. The IR543 is limited to the housecode that you set on it's dial and all other IR transceivers learn whatever IR commands you give them.

can the switches be programmed stand-alone? how come I can't find info on the Maxicontroller?, does it connect with a TW 523 or the like to a receptacle

and what are the other options for programming these switches?

Ben, the maxi controller is the cheapest and best option for programming PCS ($15.80) there are some cheaper controllers but they usually will not do all 256 codes, or for that matter 16. Search my site for PHC02. By the way PCS is going through a price revision and we will likely see a $15 to $20 jump toward the end of July, so now is a good time to buy, if you plan to take the plunge.
