Having a difficult time wiring up a 3-way switch (WS-4777-C), and is probably due to the odd-colored wires in my walls. So far, in the "best" wiring combo I had so far, I was able to get the master working properly, but the slave would turn the light off, but not on. I replaced the slave with another, but that does the same thing, so I doubt it's the switch.

Is there a surefire procedure I can use to figure out the wiring with the use of a multimeter?

I'm having the exactly the same problem. I'll have to keep an eye on your post, because my wife will probably divorce me if I don't fix that light soon!

Take a look at the schematics at [Link: ourworld.compuserve.com]

It shows the two most common 3-way wiring situations.

Those switches are a bit different from mine though -- each of mine (master and slave) has only 3 wires. I did solve the problem today with a little math -- X10 said they don't provide wiring support, but I "won't damage anything by wiring it incorrectly". So I calculated 36 combinations and got it on try #9. Some Radio-Shack alligator-clip test leads made this process considerably painless, and I did keep a fire extinguisher nearby just in case.

All's well that ends well. :-)

The difference in the switches wiring would be minor. i.e. no ground The basic concept would be the same.

So which of the wiring situations did you have?

Not completely sure which one still, but I think #2.
