Hi Folks,
I have a bit of an IR issue I could use some advice on. The only part of my rack I did not build out was my XP8 IR out to my Verizon FIOS HD boxes. Of course the connections have now begun to fail and I have determined this was due to the previous guys stuffing all the extra IR wire bunches in a small hobby box and I believe pinching some of those small wires against the openings of the box. In taking apart this box I found that they used some type of IR emitter/receiver that has two paired leads coming out of it. One dual lead wire going to the XP8 (IR Out) and the other going to the FIOS box (IR IN) on back panel, the two cables differs slightly in gauge.
Apparently there is an IR emitter midway between these wire runs which were wrapped with electrical tape presumably to prevent any IR bleeding to another receiver in the box causing any cross signals.
So here is the question for the class:
Do I need these emitter/receivers inline on these cables at all?
Can I just splice the two wires from device to device (leaving the current plugs on each end) and clean this whole mess up?

Any other suggestion appreciated as well
Ross

I'm not sure I'm following you, but my guess is that you're looking at two devices here; one is the emitter coming out of the system processor and the other is the IR receiver (allowing the source to be placed behind a wall mounted display) for the source, and that the two are taped together to allow them to talk to each other. The source may have an IR window on the front of it, but would mean an emitter on the front of the rack which a) could eventually fall off and b) may not look as good.

Added:  I shouldn't have answered so early in the morning as I realized you came to the same conclusion as I did about what it was.  I would think that the receiving end needs to be active in this situation, otherwise you would just have a dead IR receiver.  But it would be easy enough to try without.

You are 100% correct on all fronts. I'll describe fully for future reference. The funny thing was I got confused by the mix of genius and laziness. The installers found a nice receiver that left room in to put an emitter inside the receiver IR cap...very very smart. However; they didn't make room for the new wire to exit the cap and thus caused a pinch and inevitable cut, the fix 5 seconds or dremel work on 6 caps. Instead of spending $1 on spray paint to cover all the IR caps to prevent IR leakage they instead wrapped each in electrical tape (bending and putting pressure on the the now pinched IR leeds) and finally they stuffed all the winds into a box where the wires all got pinched again on the exit of the box... These IR wires are of course such high gauge that a reasonable amount of care should have been take to prevent this mess.
Anyway fixed now.
