Any progress made on this by RTI yet?  Anyone had a unit in for repair because of this?

Our office one is getting bad.  It appears to be static related, but there isn't anything we can do about it.

Any info would be appreciated.

Actually, its funny you mention this.

About a month ago, a customer calls me up to evaluate a problem with his T4 that keeps re-booting. He also mentions that he cannot get the back cover on, and would like for me to bring over a new one.

When I get there, I noticed exactly what he described, it powered up in front of me, then shut down, and powered back up. Exactly as he described.

Well, I figured I would start by pulling the battery, so I ordered a new one on the spot, and figured I would return in a day or so with a new battery and battery cover (I should have checked the battery cover during the 1st visit).

I return two days later with a new battery and battery cover, and when I go to switch the battery out, I notice that the battery in the remote is noticeably bigger than the new battery in the bag. The old battery "puffed" up and swelled so much, that when the customer took off the cover to toggle the power switch, he could not get it back on and broke the plastic feet on the cover since it would not fit.

I immediately swapped the battery and the cover, powered it up, tested and left.

When I got to the shop, I called over to RTI to explain the situation, and they had told me they heard of this before, and described this as "deep discharge".

They had sent me a new battery & cover to replace the ones I laid out, but apparently this is what caused the constant re-booting of the remote, and eventually led to the "puffing" of the battery.

This MAY be your issue, or possibly could soon be.

Yup, its a bad battery or a cracked battery connector on the motherboard

I have noticed that the T4 is very sensitive to ESD. Especially when the battery is weak. If the battery is 12 months old or older, i'm willing to bet it's the battery.

That's what I was thinking.  However, our T4 spends its whole life on the charger.  It's never off the base for more than an hour or two.

Does not matter. from what I understand the battery life is still used when the remote sits in the charger. I have plenty of 2nd homes where the battery is 1.5 years old, and has been out of the charger for 10-15 hours total, and still need to be replaced.

I asked RTI how the battery could use power while charging, and they gave me some bullshit answer. Sounds like poor engineering if you ask me.

FWIW, my iPod classic quit responding to the center click button, rendering it useless. At the same time, the battery, now 2-3 years old, was failing (5 minutes max).

Took it apart and found the battery seriously swelled. When I got the battery out of the iPod but still connected to the terminals, the thing worked fine.

The battery swelled so much that it kept the center button in the "always depressed" mode. New battery, all's well.

This battery is in my truck, always connected to power, never "deep discharged" at all. Just swelled as it failed.

BTW only T4 I've installed is swelled and needs replacing too.
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

I took a battery I thought was bad out of a T2-C a couple months ago (2-3).  Turns out the remote had to be sent back, so I had what I thought was a slightly used battery that could get me out of a jam.

Fast forward to 2 days ago - local customer needs a replacement battery in a hurry.  Cool, let me see if I still have it in my laptop bag.  Find it and the damn thing is a little swelled up!  Happened in my bag!  WTF

agree. change the battery with a new one and that should get rid of the problem (until the new battery starts to swell).
