It happened once only so far, but it makes me wonder if anything like that happened to anybody:
Turned system on(Marantz SR5004, Sony DVD player, Boston CsSub10), to watch music DVD, and sub did not engaged.
In addition, every operation on DVD (Pause, play, DVD menu etc), and on Marantz (mute, input change from and to DVD) caused Sub to fire once, just one single WHOOMP!
Sub is setup to Auto power sensing, but it did not engaged even with switch in ON position, so I turned Marantz Off and On again, and it fixed it. DVD is hooked up with Coax digital out, and Component video, and DVD is sending Dolby DTS to Marantz.

I'd like to know what caused it.

Maybe the Marantz is in need of service, as turning it off and on fixed it, that is, caused normal audio to come out of the Marantz.

The rest of the description is interesting, but only if turning the Marantz off, then on, never fixes the problem.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Agreed... the sub receives a plain, uncomplicated analog signal. So if the sub were at fault, turning the amp on and off would have done nothing to correct the problem.

I should note that the two Marantz receivers I have owned (SR-18EX and still use the SR9600) have been "randomly glitchy" on digital audio decoding... problems include occasionally deciding to not decode any audio from any digital source, decoding slightly staticy audio from a single source, or decoding slightly garbled audio (ie. sounds like a horrible quality YouTube video). They're rare enough events that they're not even bothersome, but what I'm saying is that unless this becomes a frequent repeat event, I'd dismiss it as another random Marantz glitch. :-)

Funny part is the only thing I would give my SR9600 up for... is another Marantz!

I'm feeding a Definitive Supercube from my Marantz and ran into the same problem, the sub only has auto sense and wouldn't turn on from LFE input. I wound up running LFE into a Y and into the left and right inputs and never had a problem again.

When left/right inputs are provided often auto-sense doesn't work well unless both are connected, and then yeah a Y-adapter is the solution.

That's nuts, because usually the only difference between using one input and Ying into two is that you don't have to turn the volume up quite as loud when you Y. Thanks, Daniel, for giving me a reason to sell that gold Y connector and the four inch Gold RCA mono cable!

Well, the volume thing probably related to the auto sense issue. If the general dB level is lower when only using one, then the auto-sense won't be as sensitive. I've disabled auto-sense on 2 out of my 3 subs, including a Velodyne DD-15, due to undesirable side effects (either small noises turning on/off, or they're in locations where volume levels are generally low and auto-sense doesn't work well).

I'm wondering now why someone hasn't come up with a SPDIF subwoofer interface standard...
