Hi guys,

I have an audio decoder that I bought from Singapore and I want to use it here. It has the two round prongs and on the adapter, it says:

INPUT: 230V ~ 50Hz 100mA
OUTPUT: 16V ~ 600ma

Can I plug the device into a regular socket with an adapter to see if it will work or will this damage the components?

I know that US sockets are 120V (with 220V socket for ovens).

Thank you.

If it only says 230V 50Hz it will *not* work on North American power.

If it's a removable wall-wart style adapter, it would be easier to buy a new one of those (match the specifications - 16V 600ma - and the type and polarity of the plug on the device end).

Hi Daniel,

What do you mean by wall-wart? Are you saying to buy an adapter that would have been bundled with the US version of this product (they were sold here for a long time, now they are very rare)?

EDIT: I think I understand what you mean. Does the output have to be 16V or can it be 12V?

If the unit wants 16V it's going to have to be 16V.

But does the back of the actual unit (not power adapter) give any power specifications? Some items are able to accept a small range of voltages.

Hi Dan,

The back of the unit says: 16 V in.

I'm having trouble finding 16 V output at 600mA adapters - do you know any online vendors? Would 15V be harmful to the device?

Thanks so much.

EDIT: I went to Radioshack and bought a Reverse Voltage converter. The specs are:

INPUT - 110/120VAC, 360mA, 60Hz
OUTPUT - 22-/240VAC, 165mA, 60Hz
MAXIMUM CAPACITY - 40W

Does it matter that the rate is 60HZ (on the adapter, it says INPUT 50HZ). Also, for the output, it says 165mA; does that mean UP to 165mA? On the adapter, it says 100mA for input.

165mA on the converter's output would be fine for 100mA on the power supply's input. Running a 50hz power supply at 60hz... this I don't know.

Where did you buy the unit? Also, did you get it working with US power yet?
