I'm about to purchase a denon AVR-1700 with no remote. I was wondering will the surround sound still work with no remote, or will I need to have a remote.

Hi, Remote is for convenience. You can do everything manually. Or like me I rarely touch receiver remote. Programmed Harmony 880 does most control I need.

To answer your question, a lot of the basics can be done from the front panel, many codes are available on most basic universal remotes while most other codes can be found through professional grade control systems.
Seperately, I hope you're getting a good deal on it...as its probably worth at most $20-$30.
